The following is Pack 233’s set of rules for our Pinewood Derby. The Cub Scout should DO HIS BEST! Scouts and families should focus on good sportsmanship and HAVING FUN! Your scout will remember the time you spend with him building his car… forever. The Cub Scout should have the fun of racing a car he has built from materials in the Pinewood Derby kit. Adults and others should only guide and help.
- A Boy Scout Troop will be running the race operations. Pack 233 Race Committee will be judging and deciding on awards for the event. Any and all disputes will be handled by the Pack Race Committee.
- All of the scouts will run together. There will not be separate race classes by rank.
- The race track we are using has eight lanes. Each car will run eight times, once on each lane. There will be pack awards for first, second, and third fastest cars. We will also award fastest three cars in each rank.
- There are no re-runs for mechanical break downs.
- Open Class is available to any family member of a scout of Pack 233. Open Class will follow the same rules listed below.
- WIDTH: Car can not be more than 2 3/4 inches wide.
- LENGTH: Car can not be more than 7 inches long.
- WEIGHT: Finished car can not weigh more than 5 ounces. The weight shown on the Official Race Scale is final. All car parts and materials must be firmly attached. To increase the car's weight, add wood or metal only. Don't use Mercury to add weight because it's not safe.
- WHEEL PLACEMENT: The car body must be at least 1 3/4 inches wide at the axles. It must clear the ground by at least 3/8 inch. If desired, you may change the wheelbase (distance between front and rear axles).
- WHEELS AND AXLES: Use only Official Scout Grand Prix wheels and axles. You can polish the axles. You may lightly sand the wheels to remove the molding seam and/or defects on the tread. No other wheel changes are allowed. You may not use bearings, washers, or bushings.
- SPRINGING: The car may not ride on any type of springs.
- DETAILS: Details such as Steering Wheel, Driver, Decals, Painting and Interior Details are allowed. The finished car with details must meet the maximum length, width and weight rules. Cars with wet paint will not be accepted.
- ATTACHMENTS: The car must be free-wheeling with no starting devices. No propulsion devices of any kind are allowed on any class race car.
- LUBRICATION: Use dry powdered lubricants (i.e. graphite or Teflon) ONLY. You may not use any other lubricant, especially oils and silicone sprays. No graphite may be applied inside the building, or after car inspection.
- INSPECTION: Each car must pass inspection by the Official Inspection Committee before it may compete. The Inspectors will disqualify any car not meeting these rules. Any adult or scout may appeal the findings of the Inspectors to the Race Committee Chair-person, whose decision is final.
- Scouts must register their cars during the pre-race registration period. (See flyer for location, date and times.) A scout must present a functioning car at the pre-registration. If the car fails to meet any rules, the Inspectors will tell the scout the exact problems. The Scout may change the car to meet the rules. If a scout’s car does not pass at registration, that scout will be allowed to re-inspect and check-in before the race. No cars will be accepted on race day after the first heat begins!
- After inspection, Official Scorers will take possession of the cars. The Official Scorers set-up and maintain the race brackets and tell the Official Starters which cars run in each heat.
- After registration, cars will remain in the possession of the Race Committee. Scouts will not have their cars returned until after completion of the race. Scouts may not handle their car again unless fixing the car as allowed in Ground Rule 6.(Don't take a car off the Starter's Table for any other reason unless you are instructed to do so by the Race Chairperson.)
- Official Starters will announce the Scouts to race in the heats. Official Starters will place the cars at the start, then go to the finish line to watch the heat.
- The car whose nose is first over the finish line is the winner. The track is electronically timed. Any issues will be handled by the Line Judges. If two of the three Official Line Judges can't agree on a winner, Officials will run the heat again. Judges tell the Official Scorers which car wins each heat.
- Officials present racing awards at the end of the race. Design awards are presented after the Championship awards. Last, we run the Open Class bracket.
- Scouts do not have to be in attendance to race.
- GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP AND BEHAVIOR IS EXPECTED. Race Officials may ask anyone not following this rule to leave. Any scout who is asked to leave will be disqualified.
- The Pinewood Derby is open to all Cub Scouts in Pack 233. The Open Class bracket is open to any family member of the scouts of Pack 233.
- Scouts must register their cars during the pre-race registration period. (See flyer for location, date and times.) A scout must present a functioning car at the pre-registration. If a scout’s car does not pass at pre-registration, that scout will be allowed to re-inspect and check-in before the race. No cars will be accepted on race day after the first heat begins!
- All of the scouts will run together- there will not be separate race brackets by rank.
- A car that jumps off the track and does NOT interfere with another car receives a DNF (Did Not Finish) for that heat. A car that jumps off the track and interferes with another car is moved to a different lane and the heat run again. If it happens again, the offending car loses the heat.
- There are no re-runs for mechanical breakdowns. If a car breaks down, the scout is allowed five minutes to fix the car. If the car cannot be fixed in five minutes, it loses the remaining heats.
- Only Race Officials and Scouts involved in the current heat(s) are permitted inside the track area.
- Only after completion of the scout race, will the Open classes run.
